Saudi Arabia and Qatar renew fierce rivalry in Gulf Cup 27 semi-final

Saudi Arabia and Qatar will meet for the 41st time in all competitions when they face each other in the Gulf Cup 27 semi-final, with no margin for error in a contest shaped by decades of rivalry.

The two sides have played 40 previous matches, with Saudi Arabia holding the stronger record. The Saudis have won 18 times, compared with seven victories for Qatar, while 15 games have ended in draws. Saudi Arabia have scored 53 goals in those encounters, with Qatar finding the net 29 times.

Their first meeting came in the Gulf Cup in 1970, when the match ended 1-1. That began a long series of closely fought fixtures, although Saudi Arabia gradually established an advantage in the number of victories.

The biggest win in the history of the fixture also belongs to Saudi Arabia. They defeated Qatar 7-0 in the 1979 Gulf Cup, a result that remains the largest victory recorded by either team against the other. Saudi Arabia also recorded sizeable wins in the competition with a 4-0 success in the 1972 edition and a 3-1 victory in 1974.

Qatar have produced important results against Saudi Arabia in more recent years. They won 2-0 in the 2019 Asian Cup, before Saudi Arabia responded in December of the same year with a 1-0 victory in the Gulf Cup semi-final.

The Gulf Cup has provided a particularly regular stage for this rivalry. In 2014, the teams drew 1-1 in the group stage before meeting again in the final, where Qatar claimed the title with a 2-1 win.

Their rivalry has also extended to the Asian Cup. As well as Qatar’s 2-0 group-stage victory in 2019, the teams drew 0-0 in the 2000 edition, further underlining how difficult it has been to predict the outcome of their meetings in major tournaments.

History offers no guarantee

Although the overall record clearly favours Saudi Arabia, recent encounters suggest a more evenly balanced contest. Qatar have become increasingly capable of competing with Saudi Arabia and securing significant results against them, meaning the historical gap in victories alone cannot determine who will reach the final.

The stakes are even higher this time because the match is a knockout semi-final. The winner will earn a place in the Gulf Cup 27 final, while the losing side will leave the tournament before the final match.

Saudi Arabia can draw confidence from their historical advantage and their familiarity with the opposition. Qatar, however, know they have already caused Saudi Arabia serious problems and secured notable victories against them. That record adds a psychological dimension to a tactical battle likely to be decided by the smallest details.
