Carlos Queiroz has left his position as Ghana head coach by mutual agreement, the Ghana Football Association announced on Thursday.
The Portuguese manager departs after the Black Stars lost their opening two matches in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Ivory Coast and Gambia.
Queiroz issued a statement through the Ghana Football Association, saying both parties had concluded that ending his contract was the appropriate decision in the circumstances.
“After discussions held in a spirit of mutual respect, the Ghana Football Association and I have mutually agreed to end the employment agreement governing my role as head coach of the Ghana national team.
“This was not an easy decision, but both parties agreed that, under the current circumstances, ending our professional relationship was the most appropriate option, with the interests of Ghana and Ghanaian football placed above everything else.
“It has been an honour to serve Ghana and the Black Stars. I would like to express my sincere thanks to the Ghana Football Association, especially its president, for his trust and for giving me the opportunity to lead this great football nation.
“I came to Ghana determined to help build a stronger future for the Black Stars and support the development of the country’s talent. Despite our commitment and efforts, the necessary conditions were not fully in place, while the team’s recent performances also contributed to the decision to bring this journey to an end.
“I leave with respect, gratitude and pride.
“I thank my technical staff and everyone who supported us, particularly from the beginning of our work in preparation for the 2026 World Cup.
“Above all, I want to pay tribute to the players of the Black Stars. Thank you to everyone who represented Ghana with courage, commitment and pride. You fought for your country and carried the hopes of millions.
“Trust these players. Protect them. Support them.
“The talent is there. With unity, support and the right environment, this generation can achieve great things for Ghana.
“To the people of Ghana and all Black Stars supporters, thank you for your passion, support and warmth. I will always carry Ghana in my heart with respect and affection.
“Ghana first.
“The Black Stars first.
“Ghanaian football first.
“Thank you, Ghana.
“To the future.
“Carlos Queiroz.”
Ghana announced at the start of September that it had renewed Queiroz’s contract, allowing him to remain in charge of the team.
He had originally taken over the Black Stars on a short-term deal before the 2026 World Cup. His first contract lasted four months, and his future remained uncertain after it expired.
However, negotiations over an extension made significant progress after outstanding payments owed to Queiroz and members of his coaching staff were settled.
The former Egypt manager was appointed in April, following Otto Addo’s dismissal in March after a run of disappointing results.
Despite his brief spell in charge, Queiroz led the Black Stars to the last 32 of the World Cup, where they were beaten 1-0 by Colombia.
