Egypt and Algeria compete to host 2028 African Wrestling Championship and Olympic qualifier
Egypt’s bid to host the 2028 African Wrestling Championship and the qualifying event for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games has been accepted by the international wrestling federation.
Egypt is competing with Algeria to stage both events, with the Egyptian Wrestling Federation now completing the remaining procedures connected with its application before a final decision is made on the host nation.
Egyptian Wrestling Federation president Said Salah described the acceptance of the bid as an important step.
“Having Egypt’s bid accepted by the international federation represents an important move towards hosting the two events,” Salah said.
He added that the federation was preparing a complete proposal that would demonstrate Egypt’s ability to organise continental and international competitions.
“The federation is working to submit an integrated file that reflects Egypt’s considerable capabilities in organising continental and international championships,” Salah said.
The proposal will cover the facilities and arrangements required to stage the African Championship and the Olympic qualifying tournament. These include competition halls, training venues, accommodation, transport and the organisational and technical aspects of running both events.
“There is great confidence in Egypt’s ability to host the two events in a manner that reflects their importance,” Salah said.
“The federation is seeking to provide all the ingredients for success, starting with the competition halls and training venues, through to accommodation and transport, and including the organisational and technical elements. This will ensure that both events are delivered in a way that reflects Egypt’s standing.”
A decision on the host country is expected in the coming period, with Egypt and Algeria remaining in contention for the 2028 African Wrestling Championship and the qualifying event for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
“We hope our efforts will be successful and that Egypt will be awarded the right to host both events,” Salah said.
“We are working with full commitment to prepare a strong bid that reflects our ambitions to stage these two important continental competitions.”
