Mohamed Richard Camara starts for Guinea against Kenya

Guinea coach Paulo Duarte has handed Mohamed Richard Camara his first start against Kenya in Thursday’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, replacing Soumaïla Sylla in goal.

The decision is one of several changes made by Duarte after Guinea opened their qualifying campaign with a 2 1 defeat by South Africa.

With another difficult fixture ahead, the Portuguese coach has chosen to make a change in a position that has been a concern for the Syli National in recent years.

Duarte confirmed Camara’s selection during a press conference on Wednesday, announcing that the 26 year old would start against Kenya.

Camara currently plays for Mechal Sport Club in Ethiopia, having joined the club after previously playing in Ghana for Asante Kotoko.

The goalkeeper began his development at Titi Camara’s academy and now has an opportunity to establish himself at international level.

His selection also gives the 26 year old the chance to show whether he can provide greater consistency in a position where Guinea have struggled to find a long term solution.

Camara’s involvement carries an additional significance because of his family connection to one of Guinea’s former goalkeepers.

The goalkeeper is the son of a former iconic Guinea international goalkeeper, adding another personal dimension to his first start in the AFCON qualifying campaign.

Duarte has been forced to consider changes after Guinea’s opening defeat in South Africa left little room for another setback.

The Syli National conceded twice in the match before scoring once, eventually losing 2 1.

The result means Guinea must now respond against Kenya as they continue their pursuit of qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

Duarte’s decision to change his goalkeeper is among the most notable adjustments to the side as Guinea prepare for Thursday’s match.

Camara will therefore take over from Sylla and will be expected to provide stability behind the Guinea defence.

His previous experience with Mechal Sport Club and Asante Kotoko will now be tested at international level as he prepares to make his contribution to Guinea’s qualifying campaign.

For Camara, the match represents an important opportunity to make his mark with the national team.

For Duarte, the decision is part of a wider response to the defeat in South Africa as Guinea look to avoid another setback.

The coach will hope the changes can help the Syli National produce a stronger performance against Kenya and put their qualifying campaign back on track.
