Cristiano Ronaldo ‘will not play for Portugal again’, claims O Jogo

Cristiano Ronaldo has reportedly decided to end his international career with Portugal after leaving the team’s training camp in Denmark following a dispute with manager Jorge Jesus.

Ronaldo departed angrily before Portugal’s Nations League match tomorrow after Jesus said the forward would not start and that he would not change a tactical decision for one player.

The unexpected departure prompted fresh speculation over Ronaldo’s future with the national team. Some interpreted a message he posted afterwards as a possible indication that he was retiring from international football, while others urged people to wait for an explanation of what had happened.

Ronaldo wrote: “After the national team manager’s press conference, and following a conversation with the president of the Portuguese Football Federation, I decided to leave the training camp.

“I will tell the Portuguese people, at the appropriate time, the true reasons that led me to leave the national team, to which I have always devoted myself.

“Now is the right time to wish Portugal and all my team-mates, without exception, the very best.”

Portuguese newspaper O Jogo has since made a major claim about the 40-year-old’s future with Portugal, reporting that he has made an irreversible decision not to represent his country again.

“Cristiano Ronaldo has made an irreversible decision: he will no longer represent Portugal,” the newspaper said.

It added: “The match against Wales was his last game for the national team.”

The report follows Ronaldo’s abrupt exit from the Portugal camp and the disagreement over his role in the forthcoming Nations League fixture.
