Khune praises Mofokeng after AFCON qualifying double

Itumeleng Khune has praised Relebohile Mofokeng after the Royale Union SG forward scored twice in Bafana Bafana’s 5-0 victory over Eritrea in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier in Cairo on Wednesday.

Mofokeng struck both goals in the first half as South Africa produced a dominant display against the East Africans. The result leaves Bafana Bafana top of Group D with two wins from two matches.

The brace took Mofokeng’s international tally to five goals in 24 appearances for South Africa.

His performance also continued an impressive start to the season at Royale Union SG. The forward has scored four goals and provided one assist in all competitions for the Belgian club.

Khune, who was previously Bafana Bafana’s number one, praised both finishes and highlighted the build-up to each goal.

“Yeah, beautiful strike with his left foot,” Khune said on SABC 2.

“And I mean he surprised all of us because we know that he’s stronger with his right foot, but here, he connected the ball very well.”

Khune also admired Mofokeng’s movement and the quality of Oswin Appollis’ pass for the second goal.

“What a great run by Mofokeng. But what I like about it firstly is the first touch, the run, and the execution of the pass from [Oswin] Appollis. Then what a great finish by Rele.”
