Carlos Baleba closing in on Manchester United debut

Carlos Baleba is making steady progress toward his long-awaited Manchester United debut after recovering from an ankle injury.

The 22-year-old midfielder has followed an individual training programme at Carrington during the international break and could soon return to competitive action.

Baleba recovered faster than expected and was included in United’s squad for the 1-1 draw against Fulham. However, he remained unused and has yet to play this season. He was also left out of Cameroon’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifying squad, giving him extra time to continue his rehabilitation.

The summer signing could feature for United’s academy team against Lausanne-Sport later this week as he works toward full match fitness. United paid Brighton a fee that could reach £70 million, making Baleba the club’s most expensive arrival during the transfer window.

The midfielder is expected to compete for the No. 6 position and eventually succeed Casemiro in that role. His return would be particularly timely because Manchester United have had a terrible start to the season. The game against Tottenham is very crucial to Manchester United.

Baleba is expected to be available for selection when United face Tottenham on October 10. A strong return could provide energy, defensive discipline and much-needed balance in midfield.
