Bafana Bafana sweep aside Eritrea to make it two wins from two

Bafana Bafana moved to the top of Group D in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifying campaign with a convincing 5-0 victory over Eritrea at Cairo’s Al Salam Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Pitso Mosimane’s side now have six points from their opening two matches and a plus-six goal difference, putting them in full control of a group in which only the winner will qualify for the 2027 AFCON alongside co-hosts Kenya.

South Africa had begun their campaign with a 2-1 win against Guinea, but produced a more dominant display against Eritrea, who had drawn 1-1 with Kenya in their opening fixture.

Relebohile Mofokeng gave Bafana Bafana the perfect start by scoring twice before half-time. His second goal was particularly impressive, with the forward producing an outstanding individual effort to establish a commanding lead.

The visitors continued to dictate the match after the interval and extended their advantage 10 minutes into the second half.

Sphephelo Sithole followed up to score from close range after a shot from the inspirational Oswin Appollis had been saved, making it 3-0.

Iqraam Rayners added a fourth with his fifth senior international goal. He found the net from an acute angle to put the result beyond doubt.

Luther Singh completed the scoring in second-half stoppage time as Bafana Bafana secured a comfortable victory and maintained their perfect record in the qualifying campaign.
