Aurelien Tchouameni faces defining Real Madrid season

Aurélien Tchouameni enters his fifth season at Real Madrid with his future under greater scrutiny.

Although successive coaches, from Carlo Ancelotti to Jose Mourinho, have trusted him, the France midfielder has not consistently delivered performances that fully convince the Santiago Bernabeu.

Signed as Casemiro’s successor, Tchouameni arrived with an impressive reputation. His strength, defensive awareness and ability to carry the ball made him appear perfectly suited to Madrid’s midfield. Paul Pogba once praised him, saying: “It’s a pleasure to play alongside him. He brings a lot of energy, as well as extraordinary technical and physical quality.”

However, supporters are still waiting to see the dynamic player who impressed at Monaco. Too often, Tchouameni has played safe passes without offering enough ambition going forward. After four appearances this season, including two starts, competition is increasing quickly.

Eduardo Camavinga has shown renewed energy, while Bernardo Silva has adapted immediately and provided an assist against Atletico Madrid. Tchouameni remains ahead in the pecking order, but his position is no longer guaranteed.

His contract extension until 2031 shows that Madrid still believe in him, reportedly with Mourinho’s backing. At 26, he has time to revive his best form, but this season could determine whether he finally becomes indispensable.
