AmaZulu striker Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya earns praise from Pirates great Jerry Sikhosana

Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya’s goalscoring form has prompted Orlando Pirates legend Jerry Sikhosana to describe the AmaZulu forward as one of the leading strikers in the Betway Premiership.

The 23-year-old Zimbabwean is top of the division’s scoring charts with eight goals, helping AmaZulu climb to third place and move within three points of leaders Orlando Pirates.

Ngwenya was also named the Betway Premiership Player of the Month after scoring five times in four matches for AmaZulu during August.

Sikhosana believes the striker’s most important quality is his focus on scoring rather than showcasing his individual ability.

“He’s a prolific striker who is always focused on scoring goals. He’s not the type of player who looks to show off or engage in showboating,” Sikhosana told the Hollywoodbets Sports Blog.

“Instead, he has shown remarkable consistency and has been one of the standout performers so far this season.”

Ngwenya’s performances have also led to comparisons with other Zimbabwean forwards who made a significant impact in South African football, including Khama Billiat and Knowledge Musona.

Musona scored 44 goals for Kaizer Chiefs before moving to Bundesliga club TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. Sikhosana believes Ngwenya is following a similar path.

“He is following in the footsteps of fellow Zimbabwean forwards who made a huge impact in South African football. If you look back at players like Musona, they arrived in this country and established themselves as prolific goalscorers.”

The former Pirates player went further by claiming Ngwenya is the league’s best striker when it comes to consistently finding the net.

“For me, Ngwenya belongs in that category. It is just unfortunate for South Africa that he is Zimbabwean because we need strikers of his quality to help raise the standard.”

Ngwenya leads AmaZulu challenge

Ngwenya’s contribution has been central to AmaZulu’s strong start to the Betway Premiership campaign, with the Durban club emerging as early contenders near the top of the table.

His latest goal came in a 1-0 victory over Polokwane City. Ngwenya headed in a delivery from Nkosikhona Radebe to secure another three points for AmaZulu.

Despite the individual recognition he has received, the striker has previously said his priority is helping his team win matches. He also wants to continue scoring as he competes for the Golden Boot.

The next challenge for Ngwenya will be to sustain his current form throughout the remainder of the season.
