Somalia held by Cote d’Ivoire before late physical test in 2027 AFCON qualifying

Somalia produced a disciplined defensive display against Cote d’Ivoire but eventually succumbed to the Elephants’ intensity in the final quarter of their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match.

Yusuf Ali Nur’s side frustrated their more experienced opponents for almost an hour, with a well-organised defensive block helping them withstand sustained pressure. Somalia’s performance in the first half was particularly impressive, allowing them to believe they could cause an upset by disrupting Cote d’Ivoire’s plans.

However, the physical demands of the contest eventually took their toll on the Somali defence. Cote d’Ivoire’s intensity, experience and greater squad depth proved decisive late in the game, as Somalia struggled to maintain the same level of resistance.

Somalia manager Yusuf Ali Nur acknowledged that his team had been able to contain the Elephants before fading physically towards the end.

“We managed to contain Cote d’Ivoire throughout the first half. However, we eventually gave way physically towards the end of the match,” he said.

“Against a team of this stature, you have to be physically ready and remain focused until the very last second of the match.”

Despite the defeat, Somalia’s performance reflected the tactical progress made by the team on the continental stage. The technical staff now intend to build on the discipline shown during the opening 45 minutes as they prepare for the next stages of qualifying with greater ambition.
