AFCON 2027 qualifying: Egypt score five as Nigeria suffer shock defeat

Egypt produced the biggest win of Tuesday’s AFCON 2027 qualifying programme by beating South Sudan 5-0, while Guinea-Bissau stunned Nigeria 3-0 and reigning champions Ivory Coast defeated Somalia 2-0.

Senegal also maintained their position at the top with a narrow victory in Ethiopia, while Algeria were forced to recover from an alarming start before drawing 2-2 with Burundi.

Egypt were dominant in Juba as they put five goals past South Sudan without reply. Ibrahim Adel scored twice, with Mostafa Mohamed, Omar Marmoush and Mahmoud Trezeguet also on target in a commanding performance from the Pharaohs.

Nigeria endured a difficult night in Guinea-Bissau, where the hosts secured an emphatic victory. Zinho Gano scored twice and Franculino Dju added a second-half goal as the Super Eagles were beaten 3-0.

Ivory Coast made a controlled start in their match against Somalia. First-half goals from Amad Diallo and Vakoun Issouf Bayo gave the Elephants a 2-0 win and allowed them to manage the remainder of the game comfortably.

Senegal claimed a 1-0 away victory over Ethiopia after Ibrahim Mbaye provided an early breakthrough. The Lions of Teranga then showed disciplined tactical organisation to protect their lead and collect all three points.

Morocco underlined their status as group favourites with a routine 2-0 success against Lesotho. Brahim Diaz put them ahead late in the first half before Azzedine Ounahi completed the scoring in the 82nd minute.

Algeria were given an early fright in Burundi after two quick goals put the hosts in control. An own goal by Fares Chaibi and a finish from Jean Girumugisha established Burundi’s advantage, but Mohamed Belloumi and Adil Boulbina responded to earn Algeria a 2-2 draw.

Ghana also surrendered a lead as Gambia came from behind to win 4-2. Thomas Partey and Antoine Semenyo scored for Ghana, but Ebrima Colley’s two goals and a strike from Omar Colley helped complete Gambia’s comeback.

Congo and Cameroon drew 1-1 in a competitive Central African derby. Bryan Mbeumo gave Cameroon the lead in the first half, while Silvere Ganvoula equalised for Congo.

Other results included Comoros 1-0 Namibia, Mozambique 4-1 Sudan, Madagascar 1-1 Tanzania, Cape Verde 1-2 Rwanda, Uganda 1-0 Libya, Zambia 2-0 Togo, Benin 2-1 Mauritania, Gabon 2-0 Niger and Liberia 0-1 Mali.
