Morocco maintain perfect start to 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying

Morocco made it two wins from two in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign by beating Lesotho 2-0 on Tuesday, although manager Mohamed Ouahbi said there was still room for improvement.

The result at the Free State Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein, South Africa, leaves Morocco top of Group A with six points. They have scored four goals and conceded none across their opening two matches, while the squad has also avoided any injuries.

Brahim Diaz opened the scoring in the 45th minute before Azzedine Ounahi added a second in the 82nd minute. The victory followed Morocco’s 2-0 win over Gabon in Rabat four days earlier.

Speaking to Arryadia in the mixed zone after the match, Ouahbi welcomed his team’s performance but identified finishing as the main area requiring attention.

“Yes, we won the match, but…” said Ouahbi, who was particularly aware of chances missed during the first half. Zakaria El Ouahdi and Ounahi both had opportunities to put Morocco 1-0 ahead before the interval.

Despite those misses, Morocco controlled the contest sufficiently to secure another clean sheet and continue their strong opening to qualifying. The two victories have placed them in an excellent position at the top of the group after the opening round of fixtures.

The national team had been scheduled to face Ghana in a friendly in Tangier next Sunday. However, that match is now at risk of being cancelled.

With no alternative fixture currently available, Morocco could see their training camp brought to an earlier end if the proposed meeting with Ghana does not go ahead. A decision on the match is still to follow.
