Carlos Queiroz responds to resignation calls after Black Stars’ defeat to Gambia

Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz has responded to calls for his resignation following the Black Stars’ disappointing 4-2 defeat to Gambia in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The defeat at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday left Ghana without a point from their opening two Group C matches after they also lost 2-0 to Côte d’Ivoire in their opening qualifier.

Queiroz leaves resignation decision to GFA

Queiroz was asked about his position following the latest setback and said he would be prepared to step aside if his resignation would provide a solution for Ghana football.

“If my resignation will be the solution for Ghana football, I’d be the first one to resign. But this is a decision I’ll leave for the federation.”

The Portuguese coach therefore left the decision on his future with the Ghana Football Association as pressure grows following the Black Stars’ difficult start to the qualifying campaign.

Ghana surrender two-goal lead

Ghana appeared to be heading towards their first points of the campaign after Ernest Nuamah converted a 27th-minute penalty before Felix Afena-Gyan doubled the lead with a direct free-kick five minutes later.

However, Gambia mounted a strong comeback before half-time, with Mohamed Badamosi and Omar Colley scoring to level the match.

Ebrima Colley then completed Gambia’s turnaround with two second-half goals, including a late strike to seal a 4-2 victory.

The result leaves Ghana at the bottom of Group C without a point, while Gambia move to the top of the group with six points.

Black Stars face pressure to recover

The Black Stars now face increased pressure to turn their qualifying campaign around after suffering back-to-back defeats.

Queiroz and his players will need to respond in their upcoming fixtures if Ghana are to remain in contention for a place at the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
