AFCON 2027 qualifiers: Cape Verde suffer home defeat to Rwanda

Cape Verde suffered a disappointing home defeat to Rwanda in their second Group K game of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

The hosts took the lead in the 40th minute when Gilson Benchimol found the back of the net to put Cape Verde ahead and give them a narrow advantage heading into the closing stages of the first half.

However, Rwanda responded before the break as Claude Niyonugabo restored parity with an equaliser, ensuring the two sides went into halftime level.

Rwanda then completed the turnaround shortly after the restart.

Elie Tatou Iradukunda struck in the 52nd minute to put the visitors in front for the first time in the match.

Cape Verde pushed for a response as they looked to avoid defeat on home soil, but Rwanda held firm to protect their advantage and secure all three points.

The result gives Rwanda an important victory in Group K, while Cape Verde will have to regroup quickly after suffering defeat in their second qualifying game.
