Kylian Mbappe has avoided a potentially season-ending knee injury after making the decisive choice to come off during France’s match against Turkey, according to a report on Tuesday.
The Real Madrid forward felt pain after scoring in Friday’s game and stopped playing. Medical tests later showed that continuing could have exposed him to a serious injury capable of ending his season.
Mbappe suffered a hyperextension of the posterior capsule in his left knee while on international duty. The injury is not considered serious, with an expected absence of 10 to 12 days, but it could have developed into a much more significant problem had he remained on the pitch.
After his condition stabilised for a day, Mbappe began rehabilitation work on Monday and was due to continue on Tuesday. His recovery is progressing well at Valdebebas, where he is understood to recognise that he avoided a potentially damaging setback.
Real Madrid maintained immediate contact with the medical staff of the French Football Federation after learning of the injury. The club even considered the possibility that surgery might be required, but it was eventually confirmed that an operation would not be necessary.
That outcome was welcomed by Real Madrid, although the club plans to handle Mbappe carefully as he returns to full fitness.
When could Mbappe return?
Based on the projected recovery period, Mbappe could be available for Real Madrid’s match against Villarreal on 10 October at Santiago Bernabeu. However, the date alone will not determine whether he plays, with Jose Mourinho also assessing the potential consequences of bringing him back too quickly.
If he recovers as expected, Real Madrid face a demanding schedule soon afterwards. They are due to travel to face Roma on 14 October before playing the clasico at Camp Nou on 25 October, making the timing of Mbappe’s return particularly important.
Real Madrid consider attacking alternatives
Mourinho has several options if he decides to rest the France forward. The clearest solution would be to retain the current system and use Espe in Mbappe’s place. The Portuguese manager also views the Under-21 international as a powerful attacking option who could be introduced to break down a defence if the match does not develop as planned.
Another possibility is to use Jude Bellingham as a false nine, a role which would recall the early part of his time under Carlo Ancelotti. With Real Madrid’s leading scorer unavailable, Bellingham would operate in the position as the team’s second-highest scorer.
Arda Guler could play behind him, allowing the Turkish player to start alongside Diomande on the right wing. Mourinho could also alter the formation, although that is considered unlikely.
Everything ultimately depends on the decision over Mbappe’s fitness. Real Madrid do not want to see a repeat of last season, when he was eventually forced to stop playing altogether and underwent treatment from renowned specialist Bertrand Sonnery-Cotet for his knee injury. He will now be brought back only when he is fully fit.
