Borussia Dortmund retain special option on Monaco forward Paris Brunner

Paris Brunner’s impressive start to the season with AS Monaco has revived Borussia Dortmund’s interest in the 20-year-old forward, with the German club retaining a mechanism that could allow it to match a future offer for its former player.

The Germany international, who is of Congolese origin (DRC), has scored six goals in seven matches since moving to the French club. His early form under manager Filipe Luis has made him one of the standout performers at the start of the campaign.

Brunner’s adaptation to life in Monaco has been immediate, with his goalscoring record attracting attention from several European clubs. Borussia Dortmund are among those monitoring his development closely after allowing him to leave.

Dortmund’s right to match an offer

Reports in the German media in recent weeks suggested Dortmund had included a clause that could help bring Brunner back to the Ruhr. However, the arrangement is not a conventional buy-back clause.

According to Foot Mercato, Dortmund instead have the right to match any offer made for the Monaco forward by another club. If a potential suitor makes a serious approach, the German club would be informed and could choose to match the proposal.

The agreement means Dortmund remain aware of developments surrounding Brunner and would have the opportunity to respond if another club attempts to sign him. It does not, however, guarantee that the player will return to Borussia Dortmund.

Monaco remain in control

Brunner is under contract with AS Monaco until June 2028, leaving the player’s future in his own hands for now. His immediate focus remains on continuing his progress in the Principality, although his strong opening to the season could lead to further interest from major European clubs.

AS Monaco are due to face Toulouse in matchday six of the French championship next.
