AFCON 2027 Qualifiers: Senegal edge Ethiopia in tight Group J clash

Senegal continued their AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Ethiopia in Group J.

Mbaye broke the deadlock in the 11th minute, finishing an attack set up by Nicolas Jackson. Senegal’s quick start unsettled Ethiopia, but the hosts gradually improved and worked to bring themselves back into the match.

Ethiopia created pressure after the break, yet Senegal’s defence stood firm. Patrick Vieira’s side managed the game intelligently, protecting their narrow advantage and limiting the home team’s clearest opportunities. Several substitutions in the second half helped Senegal preserve energy and control as the final whistle approached.

The visitors survived four minutes of added time to claim a valuable away win. Mbaye was named the match’s standout performer after his decisive contribution.

Senegal will play their next game against Sudan on November 11th in Group J. Ethiopia will take on Mozambique on the same day. Mozambique leads the group with 4 points after two games, followed by Senegal, then Sudan, with Ethiopia bottom with no points.
