Algeria fight back from two goals down to draw with Burundi in AFCON qualifying

Algeria recovered from a two-goal deficit to draw 2-2 with Burundi in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match.

The result moved Algeria to four points at the top of Group 9, although their position is provisional pending the conclusion of Zambia’s match against Togo.

Burundi claimed their first point of the qualifying campaign after taking an early lead in a dramatic contest.

They went ahead in the fifth minute when Algeria forward Fares Chaibi scored an own goal.

Burundi doubled their advantage seven minutes later. Jean Claude produced an impressive run through the Algeria defence before finishing to make it 2-0 in the 12th minute.

Algeria reduced the deficit in the 30th minute through Mohamed Bachir Belloumi, who plays for Hull City.

The visitors completed their comeback after the interval when Adel Boulbina scored in the 63rd minute to level the match.

The draw leaves Algeria at the summit of the group with four points, while Burundi’s first point moved them off zero. Their final positions will be affected by the outcome of the Zambia-Togo fixture.
