Ahmed Fattouh forced off with thigh injury in Egypt’s South Sudan qualifier

Egypt left-back Ahmed Fattouh was substituted after suffering a thigh injury during the second half of his side’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against South Sudan in Juba.

Fattouh went down shortly after the restart, holding the front of his thigh and signalling that he could not continue. Egypt manager Hossam Hassan replaced him with Karim Hafez in the 50th minute, while Ibrahim Adel came on for Haitham Hassan at the same time.

The match was Fattouh’s 44th international appearance for Egypt.

Egypt took the lead in the 36th minute when Mostafa Abdel Raouf Ziko scored, giving the visitors a 1-0 advantage at half-time. Omar Marmoush doubled the lead in the 49th minute, but Fattouh reported his injury shortly afterwards.

Egypt began their qualifying campaign with a goalless draw against Angola at Cairo Stadium. South Sudan, meanwhile, lost their opening match 2-1 to Malawi.

Egypt are due to return to Cairo on Wednesday to prepare for a friendly against South Africa on 4 October.
