Manchester United eyeing Jean-Philippe Mateta in striker search

Manchester United are considering a fresh move for Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta as they plan to add another recognised No. 9 in 2027.

The France international has been on the club’s shortlist for months, and his contract is due to expire in June, making a departure increasingly likely.

Mateta’s potential move to AC Milan collapsed last winter, leaving him at Selhurst Park. A hamstring injury has then restricted the 29-year-old to one Premier League appearance this season, but it has not diminished United’s interest.

TeamTalk reports that sporting director Jason Wilcox sees Mateta as a strong option for the January window. The forward has scored 62 goals in 203 appearances for Palace and could provide competition for Benjamin Sesko, whose start at Old Trafford has been affected by inconsistent form and fitness issues.

Any deal will depend on Palace’s valuation. January represents their final opportunity to receive a substantial fee before Mateta could leave for free, giving both clubs reason to explore an agreement.

Joshua Zirkzee could also influence negotiations. The Dutch forward has struggled at United and may be allowed to leave, while Palace are monitoring his situation. Interest from Italian and English clubs could complicate matters, but a swap-style arrangement may suit everyone involved.
