Olise makes instant impact as Zidane hails France match-winner

Zinedine Zidane praised Michael Olise after the Bayern Munich forward scored France’s late winner against Belgium in the UEFA Nations League.

Olise came off the bench in the 77th minute, replacing Bradley Barcola, and struck 11 minutes later to secure France’s second victory of the tournament. His goal, scored in the 88th minute, prompted an ecstatic reaction from Zidane on the touchline during Monday’s match.

Speaking after the game, the France manager said he had sensed Olise was about to score when he saw the forward take on a Belgian defender.

“I saw him dribble past a defender, so I said to myself: ‘He will score.’ I was cheering him on with all my heart,” Zidane said.

“He is an exceptional talent. I love this type of player.”

The goal came shortly after Olise’s introduction and proved decisive in a closely contested meeting. France held on to claim a second win in the competition and move to six points at the top of their group.

Belgium, managed by Mark van Bommel, suffered their first defeat and remain on three points in third place. They are level on points with second-placed Italy but sit behind them on goal difference.

Zidane also highlighted qualities in Olise’s game beyond his ability to entertain supporters. The former Bayern Munich player, according to comments reported by French network Foot Mercato, said the 22-year-old understood when to take risks and when to help his team defensively.

“When he plays, he wants to entertain the supporters. But it is not limited to that,” Zidane said.

“He has a strong understanding of the game. He anticipates the opponent’s movements and knows when to attack and when to drop back.”

Olise’s contribution came in his role as a substitute, with his brief appearance ultimately deciding the contest. His finish gave France the points after Zidane had turned to him late in the match.

Zidane took charge of France after Didier Deschamps left the position following the 2026 World Cup, where France finished fourth. The victory over Belgium leaves his side at the summit of the group after the opening two rounds of the UEFA Nations League.
