Equatorial Guinea hold firm to beat Sierra Leone in CAN 2027 qualifying

Equatorial Guinea revived their CAN 2027 qualifying campaign with a 1-0 victory over Sierra Leone in Yaounde on Monday.

Loren Zuniga Owono scored in the opening minute to give Nzalang Nacional an early lead in the second round of matches. His goal proved decisive, with neither side finding the net again during the contest.

With little room for another setback, Equatorial Guinea made the ideal start. Zuniga Owono’s early finish settled the team and provided the platform for a result they needed after the opening stage of their qualifying campaign.

Sierra Leone responded by trying to increase the pressure, but Equatorial Guinea’s defence dealt with the opposition attacks and protected its advantage. Nzalang Nacional remained organised at the back and went into half-time still in front.

The pattern continued after the interval, as Sierra Leone stepped up its efforts to find an equaliser. Despite the increased pressure, Equatorial Guinea maintained a disciplined defensive shape and restricted the visitors’ attempts to turn the match around.

The hosts managed their lead through the remainder of the game and held on to secure all three points at the final whistle. The result gives Equatorial Guinea fresh momentum ahead of a double-header against the Leopards of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Sierra Leone will next face Zimbabwe, who were beaten by the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
