AFCON 2027 hosting under review as CAF checks readiness of Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is considering whether to withdraw the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations from Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania because of delays to preparations, according to reports.

The three East African countries were jointly awarded the tournament, but concerns have reportedly grown over the progress of the infrastructure and stadium projects promised for the competition.

Information revealed by Le Monde says CAF is seriously assessing the possibility of moving the event if the current hosts cannot meet the required standards. The governing body is understood to have already begun sounding out several of Africa’s leading football nations about their ability to step in.

Ivory Coast, Morocco, South Africa, Algeria and Egypt have reportedly been approached informally to determine whether they could take over the organisation at short notice.

Those countries have modern facilities and experience of staging major international sporting events, making them potential contingency hosts should CAF decide that the East African preparations are not progressing quickly enough.

No change of host has been confirmed, but any decision to move the tournament would represent a major shift in the plans for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, the continent’s biggest football competition.
