Moses Mabhida Stadium lined up to host 2026 MTN8 final

Moses Mabhida Stadium is expected to host the 2026 MTN8 final between Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates, although the Premier Soccer League (PSL) has not yet formally confirmed the venue.

The showpiece is set to return to Durban, with the stadium understood to be earmarked for the match on 10 October. The PSL will hold the MTN8 final draw on Monday evening, with the outcome determining which team is designated as the home side and which as the away team.

If the venue is approved, Moses Mabhida Stadium will stage its 10th MTN8 final. That would strengthen its record as the most frequently used stadium in the competition’s history.

The possible return of the final to Durban follows a period of refurbishment and rehabilitation at the stadium, which was built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Work on the facility began in 2024. The eThekwini Municipality has estimated the cost of the wider project at R284 million, while the pitch has also been rehabilitated as part of an effort to restore the stadium to international standards.

Moses Mabhida has had a relatively limited role in the early weeks of the 2026/27 football season and has not featured in the PSL’s regular fixture rotation.

According to the available fixture record, its only competitive match this season took place on 6 September, when Durban City hosted Burundian club Rukinzo in the CAF Confederation Cup.

That game carried added importance because Moses Mabhida was, at the time, the only venue in KwaZulu-Natal approved to stage CAF international competition.

The stadium could now be selected for one of the biggest domestic matches of the campaign.

Orlando Pirates reached the final by defeating Sekhukhune United on aggregate in their semi-final. Mamelodi Sundowns secured their place after a dramatic last-four tie against Golden Arrows.

Pirates are pursuing a fifth successive MTN8 title and will have the opportunity to extend their dominance in the competition if they win in Durban.

Sundowns, meanwhile, will aim to end that run and claim another domestic trophy.

The final draw will take place on Monday night, with Moses Mabhida Stadium understood to be the venue being prepared for the 10 October fixture.
