AFCON 2027 Qualifiers: Guinea-Bissau and Nigeria battle for early advantage in Group L – Preview

Guinea-Bissau will host Nigeria on Tuesday in a highly anticipated Group L encounter as both teams look to make it two wins from two in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The Djurtus have made an encouraging start to the campaign and will have home advantage behind them when they welcome the Super Eagles to the Estádio Nacional 24 de Setembro in Bissau.

Nigeria arrive with confidence after opening their campaign with a 2-1 victory over Madagascar in Uyo, but the result also showed that the three-time African champions may have to work hard for points in this qualifying group.

The Super Eagles conceded first against Madagascar before turning the game around through George Ilenikhena and Moses Usor.

Eric Chelle will now expect greater concentration from his team as they face a Guinea-Bissau side that began its campaign with a convincing 2-0 win over Tanzania.

Franculino Djú and Mama Baldé scored for Guinea-Bissau in that victory, giving the team an early boost and putting them at the top of the group on goal difference.

The Nigerians will once again have to cope without Victor Osimhen, who is unavailable for the opening two qualifying matches because of injury.

Despite his absence, Nigeria showed in their opening game that they have enough attacking options to cause problems, although Guinea-Bissau are likely to present a tougher challenge, particularly on home soil.

Tuesday’s meeting is also important because Group L offers very little room for error.

Tanzania are already assured of a place at the 2027 AFCON finals as one of the tournament’s co-hosts, leaving Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau and Madagascar to fight for the remaining qualification spot.

That makes the clash in Bissau more than just another early qualifying fixture. A victory would give either side six points from their first two matches and provide a significant platform for the rest of the campaign.

Guinea-Bissau will be hoping their strong start can continue, while Nigeria will be determined to leave Bissau with another positive result and maintain their position among the leading contenders in the group.
