AFCON 2027 Qualifiers: Gambia will rely on available players against Ghana – Abdou Jammeh

Gambia assistant coach Abdou Jammeh says the Scorpions will not dwell on the absence of players who were left out of the squad as they prepare to face Ghana in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

Gambia arrived in Accra with 25 players after initially calling up a larger group, with Jammeh acknowledging that some players who were considered important to the team are not available for the fixture.

However, the assistant coach says those absences will not change the team’s approach, insisting the players in camp now have a responsibility to deliver.

“We have a squad of about 30 to 35 players we called before, so we have 25 with us here,” Jammeh said.

“Yes, we mentioned players that are important to us, but as far as they are not here, we are relying on the players that are here currently. That’s the task for them, to do the job here.”

Gambia go into Tuesday’s match with confidence after beating Somalia 2-1 in their opening Group C fixture.

Ghana, meanwhile, are dealing with several absences of their own. Alexander Djiku has been ruled out after suffering an injury against Côte d’Ivoire, while Mohammed Kudus, Jordan Ayew and Antoine Semenyo are also unavailable for the current international window.

Jameh says Gambia’s focus is therefore on maximising the resources available to the technical team rather than discussing missing players.

The Scorpions will face Ghana at the Accra Sports Stadium at 4pm GMT, with a victory potentially strengthening their position at the top of Group C.
