AFCON 2027 Qualifiers: Liberia and Mali clash as Group K race heats up – Preview

Liberia will be hoping to breathe new life into their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign when they host Mali in a Group K clash on Tuesday.

The Lone Star have little time to dwell on their difficult opening result after Rwanda inflicted a 3-1 defeat on them in Kigali.

Liberia did show enough attacking threat to suggest they can trouble Mali, with Sylvanus Nimely getting on the scoresheet, but they will need a far more disciplined performance across the pitch if they are to take something from the encounter.

Mali arrive in Monrovia with confidence after opening their campaign with a 3-1 victory over Cape Verde.

Nene Dorgeles was the standout performer in that match, scoring twice after Martial Tia had given Mali an early lead. The Eagles also showed their ability to recover quickly after Cape Verde levelled the game.

That attacking quality could pose a major problem for Liberia, particularly if the hosts allow Mali’s forwards the space to run at their defence.

But playing in front of their home supporters gives Liberia an opportunity to respond immediately. A victory would put them back in contention and prevent Mali from establishing an early advantage in the group.

Mali, meanwhile, have the chance to make an early statement. Six points from their opening two matches would give them a strong platform and increase the pressure on the other teams in the group.

Rwanda have also collected three points from their opening fixture, meaning the battle at the top of Group K could develop quickly.

There is little separating the ambitions of the two teams heading into the encounter. Liberia need points to recover from their opening setback, while Mali are looking to build on a convincing start.

The match takes place at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Monrovia, with kick-off scheduled for 19:00 GMT on Tuesday, September 29.

A win for Liberia would completely change the early complexion of their campaign, while another Mali victory would put the Eagles firmly among the early contenders for the two qualification places from Group K.
