Ipswich Town move gives Issa Diop fresh chance says Fahmi

Former Morocco international Abdelilah Fahmi has praised Issa Diop’s move to Ipswich Town, saying the defender’s regular playing time could help him maintain his level ahead of Morocco’s future international commitments.

Fahmi has been following Diop’s performances since the defender joined the English club and believes the transfer represents an important stage in his career.

Speaking exclusively to Maghreb Foot, the former defender highlighted Diop’s experience in European football and his ability to perform at a high level.

“Issa Diop is a highly experienced defender who has played extensively in Europe, notably in France and England. He has consistently delivered top-level performances since participating in the last World Cup with Morocco in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

As a former player who played in the same position, I am very impressed by Issa Diop’s performances and what he brings to the pitch.”

Fahmi also believes Ipswich Town have given Diop the opportunity to play a more consistent role after a difficult period at Fulham.

The Moroccan defender made only limited appearances last season and was regularly among the substitutes. His move to Ipswich has changed that situation, with the 29 year old starting each of the club’s first five matches of the season.

Diop completed all 90 minutes in each of those games, giving him 450 minutes of football at the start of his Ipswich career.

Fahmi believes that regular football was an important factor in Diop’s decision to join the club and has welcomed the impact it is already having on the defender’s season.

“I’m certain his move to Ipswich Town this summer was the right decision, and his current regular starts with his new team confirm it. Conversely, last season at Fulham, he played very little and was often a substitute.”

The former Morocco international also sees Diop’s regular involvement as potentially useful for the national team.

With Morocco preparing for future international competitions, Fahmi believes consistent club football can help the defender maintain his physical condition and technical level.

“This will allow him to be in top form and prepare for future tournaments with Morocco, particularly the Africa Cup of Nations next year. It is essential for a player of his age to be competitive in order to maintain his physical condition and level of play, and thus perform at his best.”

Diop is under contract with Ipswich Town until 30 June 2029 following his reported €10m transfer.

The defender’s current estimated market value is €8m.

For Fahmi, however, the importance of the move goes beyond the transfer fee. Diop’s opportunity to play regularly has placed the defender in a stronger position to maintain his form and continue competing at international level with Morocco.
