Amine Gouiri returns to Marseille after suffering injury on Algeria duty

Marseille forward Amine Gouiri has returned to his club after sustaining an injury while on international duty with Algeria.

The Algerian Football Federation confirmed that Gouiri was released from the national team squad following medical examinations on Saturday.

The 26-year-old was forced off early during Algeria’s 3-1 victory over Zambia, with interim coach Brahim Hemdani revealing after the match that the forward had suffered a quadriceps injury.

Gouiri subsequently underwent further medical tests to determine the extent of the problem, and it was decided that he would leave the Algeria camp and return to Marseille for further treatment.

The full severity of the injury has not yet been disclosed, leaving Marseille waiting for additional assessments before determining how long the forward could be sidelined.

Gouiri’s injury comes at an unfortunate time for Marseille, with the former Nice and Rennes attacker having emerged as one of the few positive performers during the club’s difficult start to the season.

Marseille are currently second from bottom in Ligue 1 and will be hoping that Gouiri’s problem is not serious enough to keep him out for an extended period.

The French club are scheduled to face Troyes on October 11 before returning to European action four days later when they host Olympiacos in the UEFA Europa League.

Marseille will be particularly keen to have Gouiri available for those fixtures given his importance to their attack and his recent form.

The Algerian international has been one of the club’s more productive attacking players and his absence would represent another setback for a team already struggling for consistency.

Marseille have also suffered another injury setback during the current international break, with defender Derek Cornelius returning to the club after picking up a hip injury while training with Canada.

Cornelius is facing a significantly longer absence, with reports indicating that the defender is not expected to return until 2027.

Marseille will now await further medical updates on Gouiri as they assess whether he will recover in time to play a part in their upcoming domestic and European fixtures.
