Meriah announces retirement as Ecua and Kanta complete new moves

Yassine Meriah has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 33, while Celestin Ecua, Mohamed Kanta and Souleymane Tuo were among the African players to confirm new career moves on 28 September 2026.

The Tunisia central defender revealed the decision in an Instagram story after a career that included 95 international appearances for the Carthage Eagles and participation in two World Cups.

Meriah had been struggling with severe knee pain for more than two years. He said he could no longer continue despite receiving medical treatment.

Having only recently joined Club Africain, Meriah now leaves the game after making a lasting contribution to Tunisian football.

Chad forward Celestin Ecua has left Yanga SC to sign for Al Shoullah FC in Saudi Arabia.

The Chadian Football Association confirmed the move on Facebook. The 24-year-old left winger has agreed a one-season contract with the Saudi second-tier club.

Ecua’s estimated market value is 150,000 euros.

Rwanda forward Arthur Gitego is no longer a FUS Rabat player, according to journalist Eric Ndagijimana.

Gitego moved to Morocco in July 2025 on a three-year contract, but the 24-year-old has ended his spell with the capital club prematurely.

His time in Morocco was disrupted by a serious injury suffered on his first Botola Pro appearance, which significantly limited his involvement. Transfermarkt values him at 50,000 euros.
