Spain win Under-20 Women’s World Cup after shootout victory over North Korea

Spain won the Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland after beating North Korea 4-3 on penalties in the final.

The match finished goalless after 90 minutes, but Spain prevailed in the shootout thanks to goalkeeper Laia Lopez, who saved two penalties.

Spain had earlier defeated Portugal, Brazil and Italy on their route to the final.

The success is Spain’s second title in the age group. They also lifted the trophy in 2022, when they beat Japan in the final.

The latest victory adds to Spain’s growing record across women’s international football. Their Under-17 team won the World Cup in 2018 and 2022, while the senior side are the reigning champions after winning the Women’s World Cup in 2023.

Spain will defend their senior world title next year.

The achievement mirrors the recent success of Spain’s men’s team, who won the 2026 World Cup and Euro 2024 under manager Luis de la Fuente.
