AFCON 2027 qualifiers: Zambia vs Togo – Chipolopolo seek response after Algeria defeat – Preview

Zambia will look to bounce back from their opening-day defeat when they host Togo in a crucial Group I clash of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers on Tuesday, September 29, 2026.

The Chipolopolo began their campaign with a 3-1 defeat away to Algeria in Tizi-Ouzou. Jaouen Hadjam gave Algeria an early lead before Fashion Sakala restored parity for Zambia in the 57th minute. However, Ibrahim Maza and Anis Hadj Moussa struck in the second half to hand the Desert Foxes all three points.

George Lwandamina’s side now return home knowing that another setback could leave them with a difficult task in Group I. Zambia will be hoping to make home advantage count at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola, where kick-off is scheduled for 16:00 GMT.

Togo, meanwhile, arrive with confidence after making a winning start. The Hawks defeated Burundi 1-0 in Lome, with Karim Dermane scoring the decisive goal in the 17th minute. That victory puts Patrice Neveu’s side level with Algeria on three points at the top of Group I.

Neveu has a number of experienced options available, including captain Djene Dakonam, Kevin Denkey and Kodjo Fo-Doh Laba. Henri Koudossou has also earned his first senior call-up, while Kennedy Boateng is unavailable through injury.

For Zambia, Fashion Sakala will be one of the key players to watch after his goal against Algeria. Patson Daka also remains an important attacking option for Lwandamina’s team.

With both teams entering the match at opposite ends of the early Group I table, Zambia need a response while Togo will be seeking another positive result to maintain their strong start.
