Kaizer Chiefs beat champions Orlando Pirates in DStv Diski Challenge opener

Kaizer Chiefs began their DStv Diski Challenge campaign with a 3-2 victory over reigning champions Orlando Pirates in Sunday afternoon’s Soweto derby.

Neo Bohloko, who captained the Amakhosi, gave his side the lead in spectacular fashion after 33 minutes. He won possession high up the pitch before spotting the goalkeeper off his line and scoring from the centre circle.

Chiefs doubled their advantage when Bohloko collected Kabelo Nkgwesa’s well-weighted ball over the defence and finished from close range.

The visitors added a third goal six minutes later. Nkgwesa was involved again, delivering a cross that Samkelo Msimango converted to put Chiefs firmly in control.

Orlando Pirates, known as the Buccaneers, responded with two goals from Siyabonga Ngwenya and Lwandle Nzimande to set up a tense finish.

Chiefs’ afternoon ended with a setback when Emile Dortley was shown a second yellow card and sent off, leaving his team to complete the match with 10 players.

Thulani Mabaso and Nkgwesa were named in the Chiefs starting line-up, while Bohloko led the side.

Richards Bay claim KwaZulu-Natal derby win

Richards Bay secured local bragging rights with a 2-0 victory over Milford FC in Sunday afternoon’s KwaZulu-Natal derby.

The Natal Rich Boys took the lead early through Luyanda Mthembu, who finished a cross from Thobani Gumede.

Milford remained within touching distance until the closing stages, but Richards Bay sealed the points in the 85th minute.

Ayabonga Madida worked his way past several challenges before firing the ball into the net to complete the victory.
