AFCON 2027 qualifiers: Algeria head to Bujumbura for Burundi

Algeria will travel to Bujumbura for their second 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match after opening their campaign with a 3-1 victory over Zambia.

The Fennecs left their training base in Sidi Moussa on Sunday morning as they began their journey to Burundi for Tuesday’s Group I fixture.

The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) arranged a 10:00 departure on a special Air Algérie flight, with the delegation expected to reach Bujumbura in the early evening after several hours of travel.

The trip comes just days after Algeria began their qualifying campaign with a win against Zambia and gives new coach Brahim Hemdani an immediate opportunity to build on that result.

Hemdani targets second straight victory

The match in Bujumbura will be Hemdani’s second game in charge of the Algerian national team.

His first ended with Algeria claiming a 3-1 victory against Zambia, giving the coach a winning start to his tenure.

Hemdani will now be looking for another positive result when his side face Burundi, with the Fennecs aiming to maintain their momentum and collect another win in Group I.

The quick turnaround means Algeria have had little time between the two qualifying fixtures, making the trip to Bujumbura the next major task for the squad.

Fennecs move from Sidi Moussa to Burundi

The Algerian delegation departed Sidi Moussa on Sunday morning before boarding the special Air Algérie flight organised for the journey.

The team is expected to arrive in the Burundian capital during the early evening, allowing the squad to settle before the next stage of preparations for the match.

The journey marks the transition from preparations in Algeria to the second assignment of the qualifying campaign.

After overcoming Zambia, the Fennecs will now have to turn their attention fully to Burundi as they seek to continue their start to the competition.

The second Group I match will take place in Bujumbura on Tuesday.

Kick-off is scheduled for 2:00pm Algerian time, which is 3:00pm local time in Bujumbura.

The fixture represents another important test for Hemdani after his side’s opening victory.

Algeria will enter the match having already secured three points against Zambia, while the trip provides their first away assignment of the qualifying campaign.
