Fermin Lopez’s rise to becoming an influential Barcelona midfielder has been built on consistent effort and years of development, according to former youth coach Oscar Lopez.
The 21-year-old is now an established member of Hansi Flick’s side, but Lopez says the midfielder’s progress was evident long before he became a first-team regular.
“Fermin is a player who always performs,” Lopez told SPORT.
“He was already performing well years ago, when he was physically weaker and found it very hard.”
Fermin’s physical development has been central to his improvement. At the same time, he has refined his movement and technical ability, allowing him to make a greater impact as an attacking player for Barcelona.
His progress, however, was not straightforward. Physical limitations presented a significant challenge during his youth career and forced him to find other ways to develop his game.
“His physical limitations have meant he has had to work in a unique way on his resilience and many footballing details, such as running into space and other technical aspects like playing one-touch or multi-touch football, shooting and a thousand other things,” Lopez added.
Those demands helped Fermin strengthen areas of his game beyond his physical attributes. Lopez believes the midfielder’s ability to connect with team-mates and use his body effectively has become one of his main strengths.
“He knows how to link up with others and make the most of his physique, something he exploits to the full, whether he plays for ten minutes or starts the match.”
Fermin has continued to build his physical strength while improving his understanding, movement and execution on the pitch. Lopez says the process has helped him become a more complete footballer and an increasingly important option for Barcelona.
