Lamine Yamal punishes Marc Guehi error as Spain strike early against England

Spain took the lead inside two minutes against England at Wembley as Lamine Yamal capitalised on a costly mistake by Manchester City defender Marc Guehi.

The opening match of League A Group C in the Nations League was being played on Saturday evening in London, with Yamal producing the decisive moment in the second minute.

Guehi lost possession in a dangerous position, allowing the Barcelona forward to win the ball and drive towards the England penalty area. Yamal then finished past goalkeeper James Trafford to put Spain ahead.

The goal gave Spain an ideal start in a meeting between the holders of the two most recent major international tournaments. La Roja entered the match as the champions of the 2026 World Cup, having beaten Argentina 1-0 in the final.

Spain also defeated England 2-1 to win Euro 2024 and arrived at Wembley having gone 38 consecutive matches without defeat.

England, meanwhile, were competing after finishing third at the 2026 World Cup. They secured that position with a thrilling 6-4 victory over neighbouring France.

The match is part of a group that also includes Croatia and the Czech Republic, who met at the same time in the other fixture.
