AFCON 2027 Qualifiers: Benni McCarthy tells critics to ‘shut up’ over Kenya goalkeeper decision after 1-1 with Eritrea

Kenya coach Benni McCarthy has launched a robust defence of goalkeeper Byrne Omondi, insisting he will remain the Harambee Stars’ first-choice despite criticism following the team’s opening draw in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Kenya were held to a 1-1 draw by Eritrea in their Group campaign opener on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi, with Omondi coming under scrutiny after the result.

But McCarthy dismissed the criticism in emphatic fashion, arguing that his own experience at the highest level of the game gives weight to his judgement.

“If you have played in the Champions League final and won it, you know football,” McCarthy said. “If you haven’t, then shut up.”

Nahom Girmai Netabay opened the scoring for Eritrea in the first half (36th minute). Kenya’s Harambee Stars fought back late, with Ryan Ogam scoring an equalizer in the 87th minute to secure a point for the hosts.

The former South Africa striker, who won the UEFA Champions League with Porto in 2004, stood firmly behind his decision to keep faith with Omondi as Kenya’s number one.

McCarthy said the goalkeeper continues to have his full confidence, despite the backlash that followed the Eritrea draw, and indicated there are no plans to make a change between the posts.

The result leaves Kenya seeking a stronger performance in their next qualifier as they aim to build momentum in their bid to reach the 2027 AFCON finals.

Kenya’s next AFCON qualifier game is against Guinea, with kick-off scheduled for 16:00 GMT at the Stade du 28 Septembre in Conakry, Guinea.

Kenya will co-host the tournament alongside Uganda and Tanzania.
