Dalic targets Al Hilal success as UAE prepare for Bahrain test

Zlatko Dalic says he wants to recreate the success he enjoyed with Al Hilal after taking charge of the United Arab Emirates at the Gulf Cup 2027 in Saudi Arabia.

The UAE face Bahrain on Monday in their second Group-stage match of the tournament, with both sides looking to strengthen their chances of reaching the next round.

Dalic, whose comments were reported by Saudi newspaper Al Riyadiyah, said his previous spell in Saudi Arabia had left him with fond memories and that he hoped to achieve a similar level of success with the UAE.

“I have beautiful memories in Saudi Arabia with Al Hilal, and I hope to achieve with the UAE what I achieved with Al Hilal,” he said.

“Although there are strong teams such as Saudi Arabia and Qatar, we will continue moving forward towards the title.”

The Croatian coach described the meeting with Bahrain as a difficult contest, while acknowledging that his opponents remain in contention for qualification.

“Tomorrow’s match will be difficult. Bahrain still have a chance to qualify, but we understand our task,” Dalic said.

“They have a great deal of experience and have been a well-organised national team for five years. They are led by an excellent coach, but we are seeking victory and to secure qualification.”

Dalic said he had watched Bahrain’s opening match against Qatar and was impressed by their performance.

“I watched Bahrain in their match against Qatar. In truth, they played a good game,” he said.

“We must continue winning because one victory is not enough. We have to forget the Yemen match and focus on Sunday’s game.”

He also called on his players to make better use of their strengths at both ends of the pitch, maintain their teamwork and prepare for Bahrain’s counter-attacks.

The UAE began their campaign with a resounding 4-0 victory over Yemen. Bahrain, meanwhile, were beaten 2-0 by Qatar in their opening fixture.

The Gulf Cup is Dalic’s first assignment with the UAE since he took over last month, replacing Romanian coach Cosmin Olariou.

Dalic previously guided Al Hilal to the Crown Prince Cup in the 2012-13 season. The club finished runners-up in the league that campaign, losing the title to Al Fateh.
