Liverpool bring back Julian Ward as sporting director

Liverpool have reappointed Julian Ward as sporting director, returning him to the role he held during the 2022-2023 season. He succeeds Richard Hughes, who has left the Premier League club to join Saudi side Al-Hilal.

Ward most recently worked as technical director for Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG). His appointment was announced on Saturday and marks a return to the club’s football operations after his first spell as sporting director.

FSG president Mike Gordon said Ward’s experience would strengthen Liverpool’s football department and support head coach Andoni Iraola.

“The knowledge and expertise he brings will only enhance our football operations, while also ensuring Andoni [Iraola] is provided with the support he requires as he continues to make such a positive impression as head coach,” Gordon said in the club’s announcement.

Ward said he was returning during a period of change for Liverpool, while emphasising that the club’s established identity remained in place.

“This is an exciting period for Liverpool on and off the pitch in which change and opportunity go hand in hand, but at the same time the culture, values and principles that have underpinned the club for so long remain as strong as ever,” he said.

Ward first joined Liverpool in 2012. During his time at the club, he worked across scouting, recruitment and player development strategy before moving into the sporting director position for the 2022-2023 campaign.

His latest appointment follows Hughes’ departure, which was the most recent in a series of senior changes at Liverpool in recent months. Michael Edwards had previously left his position as chief executive of football at FSG.

Ward will now resume responsibility for Liverpool’s sporting direction after his time working within the ownership group. His return also comes as the club continues to reshape its senior football structure following the departures of Hughes and Edwards.

Hughes left Liverpool to take up a role with Al-Hilal, while Ward moves back from his FSG position to lead the club’s sporting department for a second spell.
