Pitso Mosimane’s Bafana Bafana debut could bring a possession-based 4-2-3-1

Bafana Bafana are set to begin a new era under Pitso Mosimane this weekend, with the new coach expected to make several changes to the team previously led by Hugo Broos.

Mosimane selected a 30-man squad for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Guinea and Eritrea, plus the friendly against Egypt. The selections have already prompted debate, including questions about some inclusions and the absence of other players.

A possession-oriented 4-2-3-1 could be the formation Mosimane uses for his first matches. Ronwen Williams is the likely choice in goal, despite Sipho Chaine’s impressive club form. Williams offers greater international experience and continuity, while he has given the new coach little reason to leave him out.

Thabang Matuludi is expected to fill the right-back position. Mosimane said during his squad announcement that he viewed the defender as someone capable of replacing the injured Khuliso Mudau. Matuludi’s performance for Mamelodi Sundowns against Al Ahli Saudi may have strengthened that case.

Lebone Seema could partner Olwethu Makhanya in central defence. Ime Okon has impressed when given opportunities, but Seema’s consistency alongside Nkosinathi Sibisi at Orlando Pirates since last season could earn him the nod.

Makhanya’s strong start with Rangers FC in Scotland may have convinced Mosimane that he is ready to operate on the left side of central defence. With regular starter Mbekezeli Mbokazi injured, the young defender has an opening to establish himself.

Aubrey Modiba could get the left-back role ahead of Fawaaz Basadien. Basadien has enjoyed a rise in form at Sundowns, but Modiba’s international and continental experience may be considered more valuable for these fixtures.

Sphephelo Sithole is likely to occupy the deeper role in a midfield pairing, particularly with Lebohang Maboe injured. His responsibilities would include disrupting play, shielding the defence and linking the backline with midfield.

Teboho Mokoena is expected to retain his place after establishing himself as an important Bafana player. With Sithole sitting deeper, Mokoena could be given more freedom as a box-to-box midfielder and operate further forward.

Relebohile Mofokeng is a strong candidate for the No. 10 position, a key role in Mosimane’s system for creating chances and opening up defences. His encouraging start at Royale Union Saint-Gilloise supports his case, although his late arrival in camp could count against him.

Thapelo Maseko could start on the right after making a promising beginning at Copenhagen, including scoring goals. His previous performances for Bafana at the FIFA World Cup may encourage Mosimane to give him another opportunity.

Tashreeq Matthews offers a different option on the left. With Oswin Appollis short of form, Matthews’ positive start to the campaign at Sundowns could earn him a place.

Iqraam Rayners is the predicted centre-forward. Mosimane has traditionally favoured natural No. 9s, and although Rayners has not recently been a regular starter or prolific scorer for Sundowns, his Bafana and continental experience could give him the advantage over Yanela Mbuthuma.
