Nigeria fight back to beat Madagascar in CAN 2027 qualifying opener

Nigeria came from behind to beat Madagascar 2-1 in their opening CAN 2027 qualifying match on Friday, 25 September 2026.

The victory at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo gave Eric Chelle’s side their first three points in Group L, despite the Super Eagles being tested on home soil.

Madagascar took the lead in the 16th minute when Ehsan Kari headed the ball into the net. Nigeria struggled to impose themselves in the opening stages and went into the interval behind.

With Victor Osimhen absent, George Ilenikhena restored parity in first-half stoppage time. The young forward marked his senior international debut by finishing from an excellent Alex Iwobi assist in the 45+1st minute.

Nigeria then increased the pressure after the break, although goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali was required to make a crucial save in a one-on-one situation.

The hosts eventually completed the turnaround in the 65th minute. Substitute Moses Usor created the opening himself before producing a fine left-footed strike to beat Madagascar’s defence and secure the win.

The result gives Nigeria an important start to their CAN 2027 qualifying campaign.
