Karim Dermane strike puts Togo ahead of Burundi in 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier

Togo lead Burundi 1-0 at half-time in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match after Karim Dermane’s powerful finish gave the Sparrowhawks a deserved advantage.

Togo controlled the early stages and took the lead shortly after the 15-minute mark. Burundi failed to clear a loose ball inside their defence, allowing Dermane to strike firmly past goalkeeper Jonathan Nahimana.

Burundi gradually responded to Togo’s dominance and began to create problems for the home defence. Jean Claude Girumugisha was particularly influential on the left side of the Burundi attack, making several dangerous runs without finding a way through to goal.

Togo came close to extending their lead shortly before the interval. Arnaud Komlanvi, who had caused Burundi problems throughout the opening half, saw his effort blocked by Nahimana.

The teams went into the dressing rooms with Togo holding a 1-0 advantage.

Togo will look to add a second goal after the break and put further distance between themselves and Burundi in the qualifying contest.
