Manchester United open review into possible losses linked to Manchester City case

Manchester United have launched an internal investigation into potential financial and sporting losses they believe may have resulted from alleged financial breaches by neighbours Manchester City.

The move comes as the Premier League’s case against City continues to develop. According to The Athletic, United are examining how previous league standings may have affected the club’s income, including prize money and revenue from competing in the Champions League.

The review covers seasons in which United finished behind City in the Premier League, including three campaigns when they were runners-up.

In 2011-2012, United finished second under Alex Ferguson, while they occupied the same position in 2017-2018 during Jose Mourinho’s time as manager. They were runners-up again in 2020-2021, when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was in charge.

United are also assessing the 2015-2016 season, when they finished fifth and City came fourth. The result meant United missed out on a Champions League place on goal difference.

The club’s investigation goes beyond comparing final league positions. United are also considering how the possible consequences affected income from winning trophies and qualifying for European competitions.

Its aim is to establish the value of any financial damage the club may have suffered over the years if City are ultimately found to have breached the relevant rules.

The review includes a period when United’s current chief executive, Omar Berrada, was involved in the club’s management. Berrada previously held senior administrative roles within the Manchester City Group for several years before moving to United.

Manchester City continue to maintain their existing position on the case. The club has said the proceedings remain ongoing and confidential, while continuing to reject the allegations made against it.

A number of Premier League clubs are also waiting to see how the proceedings conclude. They are considering legal options that could allow them to seek compensation if final sanctions are imposed on Manchester City.

Such a development could lead to financial disputes between clubs, depending on the outcome of the case and any resulting penalties.
