Liverpool considering permanent Ronald Araujo deal after strong start under Andoni Iraola

Ronald Araujo has made an immediate impression at Liverpool, with his early performances encouraging manager Andoni Iraola and raising the prospect of a permanent move from Barcelona.

The Uruguay defender has played seven matches since joining Liverpool on loan until the end of the current season. He has started five of those games. The agreement includes a non-obligatory purchase option worth €55m.

According to the Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo, Araujo’s ability to adapt quickly has been particularly valuable because of his versatility. He began his Premier League campaign as a centre-back against Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest.

Iraola then selected him at right-back for matches against Ipswich Town, Fulham and Bournemouth. Araujo has also featured in the Champions League against Atletico Madrid and in the League Cup against Tottenham.

That range of roles has strengthened the impression that the 26-year-old could become more than a temporary solution at Anfield. Iraola has highlighted Araujo’s ability to operate in different positions and has expressed strong satisfaction with both his performances and his attitude since arriving at the club.

His appearance against Atletico Madrid attracted particular attention. Araujo supplied an assist with a backheel in that game, further increasing the positive response from Liverpool supporters and adding to speculation that the club could consider taking up the option to sign him permanently.

“Mundo Deportivo” reported: “Araujo’s good start could lead the sporting department [at Liverpool] to seriously consider completing the transfer, provided the Uruguay defender maintains his level throughout the season.”

Araujo remains under contract with Barcelona until 2031, but he moved to England in search of a regular starting role. So far, he has been given that opportunity more consistently at Liverpool.

Media outlets close to the English club have described his adaptation to life at Liverpool as positive. His use at right-back, in particular, is understood to have contributed to greater defensive solidity in the team.

The defender’s performances have therefore given Liverpool more than an additional option in defence. They have also provided Iraola with flexibility in how he organises his back line, while allowing Araujo to pursue the regular first-team football that prompted his move from Barcelona.

Liverpool will now assess his progress over the remainder of the season before deciding whether to activate the €55m clause. For the moment, his ability to establish himself in several positions has strengthened his case for a permanent transfer.
