AFCON 2027 qualifiers: Gambia edge Somalia 2-1 ahead of Ghana clash

Gambia made a winning start to their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a 2-1 victory over Somalia at Independence Stadium.

Ebrima Colley put Gambia ahead from the penalty spot before Bilal Njie equalised for Somalia in the second half. Mohamed Badamosi then struck 11 minutes from time to secure all three points for the hosts in Group C.

Colley gives Gambia early lead

Gambia broke the deadlock in the 18th minute when Ebrima Colley converted from the penalty spot.

Somalia were unable to find a response before half-time as Gambia went into the break with a narrow advantage.

Somalia level through Njie

Somalia came out strongly after the interval and eventually found an equaliser in the 72nd minute.

Bilal Njie scored to make it 1-1 and put Somalia back into contention for a share of the points.

Gambia, however, responded quickly and regained the lead 11 minutes later.

Badamosi seals Gambia victory

Mohamed Badamosi restored Gambia’s advantage in the 83rd minute after being set up by Suleiman Camara.

Somalia could not find another equaliser as Gambia held on to claim three points from their opening Group C fixture.

The victory gives Gambia a positive start before a difficult trip to Ghana for their next qualifier.

Gambia face Ghana next

Gambia will travel to Ghana next week to face the Black Stars in their second Group C fixture.

Somalia will also have a tough assignment in their next match when they take on Group C leaders Ivory Coast.
