AFCON 2027 qualifiers: Malawi edge South Sudan 2-1 in Group B opener

Malawi began their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a 2-1 victory over South Sudan at Bingu National Stadium.

Babatunde Adepoju gave Malawi the lead in the first half before Joseph Dhata equalised for South Sudan shortly after the restart. Lloyd Njaliwa then restored Malawi’s advantage to secure all three points in Group B.

Malawi broke the deadlock in the 20th minute when Babatunde Adepoju found the back of the net.

The hosts held on to their advantage until half-time, leaving South Sudan needing a response after the interval.

Njaliwa restores Malawi’s advantage

South Sudan levelled the contest three minutes after the restart when Joseph Dhata scored in the 48th minute to restore parity.

The momentum shifted again in the 64th minute, when Lloyd Njaliwa scored to put Malawi back in front.

South Sudan were unable to find another equaliser as Malawi held on for a crucial opening victory in their AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign.

Malawi face Angola next

Malawi will now turn their attention to their next Group B fixture against Angola as they look to build on their winning start.

South Sudan, meanwhile, face another difficult assignment when they take on Egypt in their next outing.
