AFCON 2027 qualifiers: Mohamed Eisa’s late penalty hands Sudan crucial win over Ethiopia

Sudan began their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over Ethiopia at the Juba National Stadium, securing three valuable points after a largely cagey encounter.

The Falcons of Jediane were made to work for the result as Ethiopia frustrated their attempts to establish control, particularly during a first half in which neither side created enough clear opportunities to break the deadlock.

Sudan, coached by James Kwesi Appiah, approached the contest with a cautious structure, looking to remain compact without the ball and exploit spaces when possession turned over. However, they struggled to translate their defensive organisation into sustained attacking pressure during the opening stages.

Ethiopia enjoyed spells of possession and moved the ball through short passing combinations, attempting to draw Sudan out of their defensive shape. Despite their promising build-up play, the Ethiopians found it difficult to turn possession into meaningful chances around the Sudanese penalty area.

The opening 45 minutes consequently produced little in terms of goalmouth action. Both teams maintained disciplined defensive lines, while misplaced passes and loose touches in midfield repeatedly disrupted promising attacks.

Sudan’s centre-backs dealt effectively with Ethiopia’s attempts to create opportunities from wide areas, while the Ethiopian defence remained organised against Sudan’s direct approach and aerial threat.

The teams therefore went into the interval level, with the match still waiting for a moment of individual quality or a defensive mistake to alter its course.

Appiah’s changes shift the momentum

The contest opened up after the restart as both sides recognised the need to take greater risks in pursuit of the opening goal.

Appiah responded by making changes intended to add pace and creativity to Sudan’s attack. The substitutions helped the Falcons become more assertive in the final third and put greater pressure on Ethiopia’s defensive unit.

Sudan gradually began to win more second balls and sustain attacks for longer periods. Ethiopia, which had looked comfortable for much of the opening half, increasingly found itself defending deeper as the pressure mounted.

The visitors also became more vulnerable to fouls in dangerous areas as Sudan intensified their attacking efforts. The growing pressure eventually produced the decisive moment with the match approaching its conclusion.

Eisa delivers from the spot

Sudan were awarded a penalty in the 86th minute after an Ethiopian defender mistimed a challenge inside the box during a quick Sudanese attacking move.

Mohamed Eisa took responsibility from 12 yards and kept his composure when it mattered most. The striker sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to put Sudan ahead and spark celebrations from the Falcons.

The late breakthrough forced Ethiopia to abandon its more cautious approach and commit additional players forward in search of an equaliser.

Sudan, however, managed the closing stages effectively. Rather than allowing Ethiopia to dictate the final minutes, Appiah’s side maintained its defensive discipline and dealt with the increased pressure.

Ethiopia pushed forward during stoppage time, but Sudan held firm to preserve their advantage and claim all three points.

The victory gives Sudan an important start to their Group J campaign, while Ethiopia are left to reflect on a match in which their promising periods of possession ultimately produced little attacking reward.

For Appiah and his players, the result will provide an early boost in their pursuit of qualification, although the narrow margin of victory underlines how closely contested the opening fixture proved to be.
