AFCON 2027 qualifiers: Mohamed Eisa scores late to give Sudan narrow victory over Ethiopia

Sudan made a winning start to their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign after a late Mohamed Eisa goal secured a 1-0 victory over Ethiopia at Juba Stadium.

Eisa struck in the 86th minute to break the deadlock and give Sudan three points in their opening Group J fixture.

Eisa breaks Ethiopia resistance

The match appeared to be heading towards a goalless draw before Sudan finally found the breakthrough four minutes from full time.

Mohamed Eisa scored in the 86th minute to put the hosts ahead and give Sudan a crucial advantage in the closing stages.

Ethiopia were unable to respond as Sudan held on to claim victory and begin their AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign with three points.

Sudan take early Group J lead

The result puts Sudan at the top of Group J with three points after the opening round of fixtures.

Senegal and Mozambique shared the points in the other Group J match, leaving Sudan ahead of both sides at this early stage of the qualification campaign.

Mozambique next for Sudan

Sudan will now prepare for a difficult away fixture against Mozambique next week as they look to build on their winning start.

Ethiopia will also be seeking a response in their next Group J fixture as the race for qualification continues.
