Egypt FA chief Hani Abu Rida wades into Hossam Hassan-Mohamed El Shenawy controversy following squad snub

Football Association president Hani Abu Rida has expressed his appreciation for Al Ahly and Egypt goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy following his omission from the Pharaohs’ latest squad.

El Shenawy was left out of Egypt’s squad for the opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Angola, with head coach Hossam Hassan explaining that the decision was based on sporting and technical considerations.

Speaking at the press conference ahead of the Egypt-Angola encounter, Hassan explained that he had previously continued to select El Shenawy during periods when the goalkeeper was struggling for form and had played a role in helping him regain his confidence and level of performance.

Despite the decision to leave the experienced goalkeeper out of the current squad, Abu Rida has made it clear that the Football Association continues to hold El Shenawy in high regard because of his contribution to Egyptian football.

In statements published by the Egyptian Football Association’s official website, Abu Rida described El Shenawy as one of the loyal figures in the history of Egyptian football, highlighting the goalkeeper’s achievements with both the national team and Al Ahly.

The FA chief also praised El Shenawy’s leadership qualities, stressing that his contribution over the years extends beyond his performances between the posts.

Abu Rida said the goalkeeper’s achievements and service to Egyptian football are highly appreciated by the federation and expressed his pride in what El Shenawy has accomplished throughout his career.

The comments come amid renewed attention surrounding El Shenawy’s position with the national team following his omission from the latest squad. The veteran goalkeeper has been a key figure for both Egypt and Al Ahly for several years, playing a significant role in a number of domestic and continental successes.

While Hassan opted for a technical decision regarding the Angola qualifier, Abu Rida’s remarks underline the respect El Shenawy continues to command within the Egyptian football hierarchy.

Meanwhile, Abu Rida also congratulated Egypt’s Under-20 national team, made up of players born in 2007, after their opening victory over Libya in the North African qualifiers for the Africa Cup of Nations.
